General information (reproduced from JTB-GM's page) Back to Top

PASSPORT AND VISA
To visit Japan, you must have a valid passport. A visa is required for citizens of countries that do not have visa-exempt agreements with Japan. Please contact the nearest Japanese Embassy or Consulate for visa requirements.

DUTY FREE IMPORT
Personal effects and professional equipment can be brought into Japan duty free as long as the customs officer deems their contents and quantities reasonable. You can also bring in 400 cigarettes, 500 grams of tobacco or 100 cigars; 3 bottles of alcoholic beverages; 2 ounces of perfume; and gifts and souvenirs whose total market price is less than 200,000 yen or its equivalent. There is no allowance for tobacco or alcoholic beverages for persons aged 19 years or younger. Firearms and other types of weapons, and narcotics are strictly prohibited.

INSURANCE
The organizer cannot accept responsibility for accidents that might occur. Delegates are encouraged to purchase travel insurance before leaving their home country. Insurance plans typically cover accidental loss of belongings, medical costs in case of injury or illness, and other possible risks of international travel.

CLIMATE
The average temperature in Tokyo during the period of the Conference ranges between 23-30 degrees Celsius.

Please be careful about dehydration caused by the heat and humidity, which many feel like being in a sauna.

CURRENCY EXCHANGE
Only Japanese yen (¥) is acceptable at regular stores and restaurants. Certain foreign currencies may be accepted at a limited number of hotels, restaurants and souvenir shops. You can buy yen at foreign exchange banks and other authorized money exchangers on presentation of your passport.

TRAVELER'S CHECKS AND CREDIT CARDS
Traveler's checks are accepted only by leading banks and major hotels in principal cities, and the use of traveler's checks in Japan is not as popular as in some other countries. VISA, MasterCard, Diners Club, and American Express are widely accepted at hotels, department stores, shops, restaurants and nightclubs.

TIPPING
In Japan, tips are not necessary anywhere, even at hotels and restaurants.

ELECTRICITY
Electric current is uniformly 100 volts, AC, throughout Japan, but with two different cycles: 50 in eastern Japan including Tokyo, and 60 in western Japan including Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka. Leading hotels in major cities have two outlets of 100 and 220 volts but their sockets usually accept a two-leg plug only.

SHOPPING
Shops and other sales outlets in Japan are generally open on Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays as well as weekdays from 10:00 to 20:00. Department stores, however, are closed on one weekday, differing by store, and certain specialty shops may not open on Sundays and national holidays.

CELL PHONE
Cell phones taken from foreign countries do not work in Japan, unlike in other Asian countries. If you wish to use a cell phone in Japan, you might want to try a rental service which is available at the service counter in the Narita International Airport.

Access information (with a map reproduced from JTB-GM's page) Back to Top

FROM NARITA TO CENTRAL TOKYO
At Narita International Airport, you may either take a shuttle bus or Narita Express (NEX) run by Japan Railways (JR). The shuttle bus stops near some of the hotels listed on the Registration Page (e.g. Shibuya Excel Hotel). It takes 85-100 minutes, depending on traffic conditions.

NEX, departing about every hour, goes to central Tokyo non-stop. It stops at Tokyo station and then at Shinagawa station. It takes about 65 minutes. You can purchase a ticket at the JR counter inside the Narita International Airport. All seats are reserved seats, and the trip is comfortable. The timetable can be found here. We recommend that you purchase a ticket to the nearby JR station which will make your trip simpler. At either Tokyo or Shinagawa station, you may take a local train and go to the place where you will be staying or the University of Tokyo Komaba campus.

An example. You take NEX from Narita International Airport to Shinagawa. The train arrives in the platform #13. Then you wish to go to Shibuya, where your hotel is located. Unless you take a taxi, you might like to take Yamanote Line, departing from platform #2, and you will arrive at Shibuya station in 12 minutes. Then either walk to your hotel or take a taxi.

TAKING A TAXI
Generally, taxi drivers in Tokyo do not speak English. Many of them are polite, but some drivers seriously lack knowledge of local streets. Below is the address of University of Tokyo Komaba Campus, which you might print out and show to the driver.

FROM CENTRAL TOKYO TO KOMABA CAMPUS
For most of you staying in the Shibuya-Yoyogi-Shinjuku area, the first thing is to get to the Shibuya station. Then take Inokashira Line, whose platforms are located at the southern end of Shibuya station. Please do not get on the express train; only the local train stops at Komaba-Todaimae, which is the second stop from Shibuya. It takes only 4-5 minutes. "Todai" is abbreviation of "Tokyo Daigaku" which is University of Tokyo.

The panel indicating departing trains at the entrance gate of Inokashira Line looks like this. It alternates between English and Japanese at regular intervals.

WARNING: Morning in Shibuya is aberrantly crowded. It might be sometimes necessary to move forward on the platform of Inokashira-line for a less crowded zone.

The University of Tokyo Komaba Campus is actually within walking distance from Shibuya (ca. 20 minutes). It might be interesting to take a stroll down the Shibuya streets for its unusual glitter.

At Komaba-Todaimae station, please use the exit closer to Shibuya (i.e. if you come from Shibuya, the exit near the tail of the train is more convenient). For how to move around after arriving at Komaba-Todaimae station, please refer to the campus map in the Venue section.

Registration & Banquet (for location, please refer to the campus map in the Venue section) Back to Top

Registration can be completed at the following time/place. If you are pre-registered but have not made payment yet, please make your payment at the Registration Desk.

On-site registration can also be done at the time/place indicated above. However, please keep in mind that the conference packet (including book of abstracts) may be out of stock if the number of on-site registrants exceeds our expectation.

You are also welcome to sign up for the Banquet at Registration Desk, scheduled on the evening of September 2 (19:00-21:00 @ Faculty House) as long as there is vacancy. The charge is 6000 yen for regular participants and 5000 yen for students. Please make your payment in cash.

Lunch (for location, please refer to the campus map in the Venue section) Back to Top

BASICS
Since the time for lunch is limited during the conference and there are not many restaurants near the campus, we suggest that those of you who can get around in Japanese may better bring your own lunch. You can, for example, buy pretty good sandwiches and pastries in Shibuya. The Lounge will be open during lunch break. It may also be fun to have lunch on the outside bench under sunshine.

ON-CAMPUS EATING
Inside the University of Tokyo Komaba Campus, there is a more than decent French-style restaurant, Lever son Verre, located in the Faculty House.

The University of Tokyo's student union (COOP) operates during the Conference except on September 3 (Sun). There you can buy sandwiches, lunchboxes, snacks and drinks. The business hours are 11:00-18:00 on August 31 (Thu) and September 1 (Fri), and 11:00-15:00 on September 2 (Sat). The student union (COOP) also has a restaurant, which operates on weekdays only.

The location of vending machines of soft drinks are indicated on the campus map.

LUNCHBOX (limited offer)
Especially for those participants coming from abroad, we are ready to order lunchboxes. The price will be between 800-950 yen. Tickets for simple Japanese-style lunchboxes will be sold at the counter next to the Registration Desk on August 31 (Thu), where the menu will be displayed. You may buy tickets either for all three days of the conference, or for any of the day(s) of your choice, but all orders must be made and paid in cash on August 31 (Thu).

Pre-ordered lunchboxes can be picked up on each day of the conference during lunch time.

OTHER INFO
We are compiling a list of restaurants and convenience stores (such as Seven-Eleven) near the campus for distribution at the Registration Desk.

Dinner (for location, please refer to the campus map in the Venue section) Back to Top

Inside the University of Tokyo Komaba Campus, there is a more than decent French-style restaurant, Lever son Verre, located in the Faculty House.

On September 2 (Sat.), there will be Banquest (19:00-21:00 @ Faculty House). For details, please refer to Registration and Banquet above.

Unfortunately, there are not many recommendable restaurants for having dinner near the campus. From Komaba-Todaimae station, you could either go to Shibuya (going "upward" to central Tokyo) or to Shimokitazawa (going "downward" away from central Tokyo) where you can find a wide range of restaurants and pubs. You might also ask at the front desk of your hotel about the place to dine at.

The location of vending machines of soft drinks are indicated on the campus map.

Book exhibition (for location, please refer to the campus map in the Venue section) Back to Top

There will be book exhibitions by John Benjamins, Oxford University Press/S.I. Book Service, and Bonjinsha (Japanese books in humanities). Each publisher will offer their selected books of linguistics at discount price. The place will be the Lobby of Building 18.
