Motivation and Language Education
Issues in the field of second-language education can often be reduced to the question of how to motivate learners. In this course, we will examine and discuss recent insights and research on the issue of motivation, focusing on how that thinking might be applied to the language classroom, educational programs and institutions, and language-education policy. Methods of researching motivation will also be discussed.
Readings from the textbook, and sometimes from other sources, will be assigned each week, and the readings will be discussed in class. Depending on the size of the class, students might be asked to give presentations on recent research papers. The class will be taught in English, though Japanese may be used when appropriate.
Students will be graded based on their class participation and a final paper, which will be due a few weeks after the end of the semester.
