This course will present an introduction to the main issues in English-language education, with a particular focus on English education in Japan.
Among the issues that are likely to be discussed are the following:
(1) The variety and roles of English in today's world
(2) The history of English-language education
(3) Cognitive-focused educational methods
(4) Social-use-focused educational methods
(5) English for specific purposes
(6) English for academic purposes
(7) English for general purposes and for no purposes
(8) The commercial English-teaching industry
(9) Self-study methods and materials
(10) Social attitudes toward English and English education
(11) The teaching of English to children
(12) Political ideologies and English education
(13) Government educational policies
(14) International trends in language education
(15) Controversies in English education
The classes will consist of lectures, group discussions, and student presentations. The topics and readings will be chosen as the semester proceeds.
The class will be taught in English, though Japanese may be used when necessary.
Students will be graded based on their class participation, presentations, occasional homework, and final paper.
