In this course, we will read and discuss works on the theory and practice of visual culture in the 20th century, with a particular focus on the interplay between media, culture and society. While works on the United States will be the default focus, participants will be encouraged to think of the impact of globalization on media and society in various regions of the world.
We will read book excerpts and/or academic papers every week.
Students will take turns facilitating the discussion.
Assessment will be made holistically considering their participation in the discussions, their performance as facilitator, and their term paper.

Please note that this is a graduate course that is made available to undergraduate students. As such, the seminars will be run like a graduate course where students will be expected to lead discussions based on the readings and engage in deeper conversations about the material. As for assessment, undergraduate students will receive different instructions from the graduate students.
