This seminar presents a review of the basic foundations of phonetics and phonology (e.g. phonetic transcriptions, allophones, phonological features) as well as more advanced topics (e.g. understanding and reading spectrograms, phonological theories). Throughout this course we will put this knowledge into practice, doing spectrogram analyses and solving phonological problems. This class is one of the four introductory courses in linguistics and is mandatory to those MA1 students who will write their MA theses in the field of linguistics. Students who major in another field than linguistics but are interested in phonetics and phonology are also welcome.
Week 1-2: Review of articulatory phonetics (IPA symbols) Week 3: The physics of sound Week 4 and 5: Looking at speech Week 6: Hearing and speech perception Week 7: Phonology: abstraction, contrast and predictability Week 8: Phonotactics and alternations Week 9: Phonological problems and distinctive features Week 10: Rules and derivations Week 11: Syllables and prosodic domains Week 12: Stress Week 13: Final exam
The course format is made of lectures and pair work conducted exclusively in English.
