This course will study the relationship between mourning, modernity, and photographic technology. Throughout the course we will consider what relationships these three form and we will ask what kind of mourning, if any, does photography make possible?

The class will rely on classroom discussion centered around the readings for that week. Student presentations will be used to give the discussion focus and encourage all-around participation.
Grades will be based on class attendance and participation, preparedness, a combination of short and long essays, and possibly a class presentation or two.
All materials will be provided in electronic format.
This course is offered as part of the Japan in East Asia Program. The class will be conducted in English, including all class discussion. All reading materials will be in English and all assignments must be completed in English.
Students must attend the first class to register for this course. The instructor may place an enrollment limit if the number of students is too large. In this case, some form of screening will occur in the first week.
