This course aims to provide an introduction to three different strategies for explaining cognitive phenomena. In the first semester, explanations involving mental representations will be discussed, dealing with phenomena ranging from visualisation to inference, and from classification to lexical understanding. In the second semester, a socio-cultural approach, and a connectionist approach will be considered.
Classes will be based on set texts, which we will read and discuss. Students will be encouraged to question and comment.
There will be an end-of-semester assignment, for which students will have the freedom to choose any topic we have considered and write a short essay about it.
All necessary materials will be provided.
Classes will be conducted in English.
