Throughout this course we will question teaching and testing methods used in the language classroom based on theories and experimental results in the area of second language acquisition, with a particular focus on the teaching and learning of speech production and perception. In this seminar, students will be required to contribute to in-class discussions by presenting and discussing material (e.g. book extracts, journal articles, etc.) pertinent to language acquisition and education. Topics covered in this class may include the so-called critical period hypothesis for second language acquisition, implicit versus explicit teaching methods, computer-based learning and testing methods, and similar topics. Students will be responsible to choose some of the topics discussed in this seminar.
By the end of this class, students should have demonstrated their ability to critically evaluate and discuss theoretical, experimental and pedagogical material related to language acquisition and education.
The course format is made of in-class discussions and presentations conducted exclusively in English.
