The purpose of this course is to provide training in the theory and practice of second-language writing education, with particular emphasis on academic writing in English. Topics to be discussed in the course include the nature of writing as a medium; characteristics of academic and other types of writing; key issues in writing pedagogy; the controversy over grammatical feedback; contrastive rhetoric; the use of technology in the teaching and learning of writing; specific linguistic and stylistic problems that occur in second-language writing; the use of machine translation in second-language writing; and writing centers and tutoring. The course will thus provide teacher training for graduate students who may teach English or other languages in their future careers as university instructors.
