This course will show how story is created, meaning a gripping narrative that involves the reader emotionally in the act of reading. The human mind uses story as an organising force, and from the basic ingredients of language and subject matter a narrative can usually be constructed. This course will examine the strategies writers use to exploit story and create satisfying fictions. Students will read extracts of exemplary narrative texts in English and create their own samples of writing (also in English, though the principles apply across languages). The course will also offer an overview of Creative Writing as a formal discipline, and whether narrative writing is a skill that can effectively be taught.
