In this 6-month course, we will read and discuss extracts from two recent books by Michael Tomasello - A Natural History of Human Thinking (Harvard, 2014) and A Natural History of Human Morality (Harvard, 2016). The aim of the course is to decide whether Tomasello has found a 'middle way' for psychological explanation, between Skinnerian behaviourism and the cognitive approach.
Class will be taught by readings and discussion. Students may be asked to make presentations and lead discussions themselves.
Students will be required to write an essay on a topic from the course.
We will be using the two books mentioned above.
Not required.
The classes will be given in English, and will be more relevant to first than second language acquisition.
